D. Šuica: Possible sanctions from the EU could cost us the Pelješac Bridge

˝If it happens that Croatia be denied funding for the Schengen area, it automatically begs the questions of financing of the Pelješac bridge. I am terribly afraid of this,˝ she HDZ member of the European Parliament Dubravka Suica to tportal after it was announced that a motion for sanctions for Croatia, due to violations against the European arrest warrant, was supported by all members of the European Commission.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, together with Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding and Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fuele, started the procedure for initiating sanctions against Croatian because of the case ˝Lex Perković˝, about which they informed the other commissioners last Friday.

The European Commission was very clear last month that quick and unconditional changes of Croatian laws were needed in order for Croatia to align its position with the European arrest warrant. In the absence of such action, the Commission will take action provided for in Article 39 the Croatian accession treaty. After ten days of consultations with Member States pass, Croatia could be threatened with sanctions in the form of suspension of money for projects in the areas of Schengen and Justice.

Only a few individuals would be protected by changing of the arrest warrant called ˝Lex Perković˝ just before entering the European Union. We get the impression that governments within developed countries of the European Union distrust of Croatia.

˝You can be sure that I am not happy about this development of events. It is a great shame for Croatia and I am baffled by the irrational stubbornness of our prime minister. I believe that this is not the place to flex muscle and I am afraid that irreversible, huge damage has been done to Croatia,˝ said Dubravka Šuica, who wants to believe that there is still time for improvement of laws through urgent procedure as is sought by the rules of the club that Croatia voluntarily joined. ˝If it happens that we are denied the means for the Schengen area, it automatically brings up the situation related to the financing of the bridge, and if we are not in the Schengen area, it means the possibility that the bridge won’t be funded. I am terribly afraid of this. There is still time for Prime Minister Zoran Milanović to convene the government, change the bill and send it to parliament,˝ concluded Šuica.

Already in late June, the leadership of the Croatian Democratic Union was addressing the problem of ˝Lex Perković˝, warning that it must be approached seriously and that Brussels must also be taken seriously. Ignoring of and disregard for what was signed in the pre-accession treaty puts Croatian on the spot and puts it in a position as a country that cannot be trusted.

This will also materially damage Croatia, as due to this Croatia could be left without 80 million euro for the Schengen area, but also without money for the possible construction of the Pelješac Bridge. The current government has been chosen for a term of four years, however, a Prime Minister who lacks seriousness and an irresponsible government are a serious problem for Croatia which will leave a long-lasting stamp on Croatia, an uncomfortable stamp and mortgage for Croatia.

All member states of the European Union will be notified in writing about possible procedures for initiating sanctions, which could be launched as early as next week. The European Commission says Croatia can avoid sanctions only if it changes ˝Lex Perković˝ promptly and without further ado.
