˝We are guilty of many errors, but our worst crime is abandoning children and neglecting the fountain of life. Many things we need can wait, but the child can not wait, now is the time that his bones are formed, that his blood is created, and that his senses are developing. We can not answer tomorrow to him; his time, that is, his name, is today,˝ MEP Dubravka Šuica quoted Gabriela Mistral, the Nobel laureate for Literature in 1945, during the discussion about malnourished children and added that all we can ask ourselves what we have done since that time.
Although we live in 2014, nearly one billion people suffer from hunger, while at least 225 million children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition. These are just some of the disturbing facts that were presented today by MEPs and the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.
˝Given that the EU is the biggest donor of development aid in the world, we must act together on this issue, especially when we speak of malnourished children, and you Commissioner Stylianides can achieve the linking of internal and external EU policies. I want to thank Rapporteur McAvan for keeping this topic relevant and alive, especially as it comes in a week when we adopted a Global Framework for Development, and we must not ignore this week's visit by Pope Francis, who pointed out that we must not stand still while huge amounts of food are thrown away, we should not remain only on words, we must all work together,˝ Šuica concluded.
