Members of European Parliament discussed the report on the EU and the Global Development Framework for the period after 2015, whose author is Davor Ivo Stier, a member of the Croatian EPP Delegation in the EP. The report was adopted by a large majority, and the Council is expected to endorse the decision in December in order to ensure that Member States intensify their efforts in the fight against poverty and that the EU become a world leader in the fight against poverty.
''Since the EU is the biggest donor of development aid, then it must be the leader in the negotiations that follow. Member States must act together, unified, coherent, and an important determinant of the program is the universality because it applies to all countries of the world," said MEP Dubravka Šuica.
It is worth noting that it is in the interest the European Union to become a leader in the upcoming negotiations with the UN for a new global development framework after 2015 and it is commendable that the report specifically deals with the area of gender equality and women's rights, as well as topics such as medium and small enterprises, environmental protection, the rule of law and local government.
''We know that part of the Millennium Development Goals has been achieved, but today we need a new program. It is important to take into account all aspects, from social to economic, as well as the aspect of environmental protection. In any case, poverty must be eradicated in all 28 states, and in order to succeed we must have a common position,'' concluded Šuica.
