At today's plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs discussed the conclusions of the European Council from the 28th and 29th of June 2016. The topics of migration and Brexit dominated the debate, and many have expressed their regret over the results of the referendum, but they also emphasized that the decision should be respected.
Member of European Parliament Dubravka Šuica also spoke during the Plenary Session: ˝I believe that the European community is the answer to many problems, and in particular, this was proven with the issue of migration. As for the results of the referendum in the United Kingdom, I am sorry regarding the result, but I am still happy that the 27 heads of state in the European Council have stood together in the defense of a collective Europe. If the British think they can choose that which suits them, then I would like to say that the EU is not a 'menu' from which they can choose, so if they want access to the free market, it is necessary to respect the four freedoms, including the freedom of movement of people. I believe that we will remain steadfast and that we, Europeans, will steer towards a culture of responsibility for the future of Europe. We have good laws, but we have to implement them and be sure that heads of state are not saying one thing in the European Council and another in their national parliaments. Europe is the answer and we must concentrate on our growth and employment and to continue with the investment plan in line with the priorities of Jean-Claude Juncker and the European Commission. Therefore, we need responsible politicians who will not hide behind cheap populism, because for us the citizen at the centre. The EU does not mean a loss of sovereignty, rather the EU should be seen as a win.˝
