The Office of the Member of Parliament Dubravka Šuica, in cooperation with DUNEA, the Regional Development Agency of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, organized on 6 October an international exhibition called “On the trails of the medieval tombstones stećci” in the European Parliament. Four states took part in the project, which was financed by the European Commission. The locations featured in the exhibition are: Novakovo groblje in Čepikuće (Croatia), Bijača in the vicinity of Ljubuški (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Grčko groblje in the village of Hrt near Prijepolje (Serbia) and Marina šuma near Pljevlja (Montenegro).
“Exhibitions and projects such as these enrich our cultural heritage and at the same time make us aware of the fact that we should go forth in the search for undiscovered treasures, which will surely contain some other gem such as this”, emphasized Dubravka Šuica, head of the Croatian delegation in the EPP Group during the opening ceremony.
“The value of stećci is demonstrated by the fact that two locations were nominated for UNESCO’s World Heritage list”, said Nikola Dobroslavić, the county prefect of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
“Wax ships”, another exhibition which took place in the same area and at the same time, was also organized by the Office of MP Šuica. Tonči Jonjić, a well-known road sweeper in Dubrovnik, exhibited his unique models of wax ships and galleys. “Trade, and the boat as its focal point, gave impetus to the development of medieval Dubrovnik. Therefore, the models of the ships karaka and galijun were used as a motif and inspiration for this original souvenir. Dubrovnik was well-known in the world precisely because of them, but today its importance has somewhat diminished” said MEP Šuica.
The wax models of different historical ships will be on show until 9 October, featuring the Dalmatian galley, the Venetian galley, trabakul, gajeta, the Neretva lađa, the Dalmatian kajić, the Dubrovnik karaka, the Dubrovnik galley and one modern ship – the cruiser – which has become an everyday sight in Dubrovnik.
