Member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in the European Parliament Dubravka Šuica asked the European Commission to clarify what actions it is undertaking in order to bring order to the EU single market, with the aim of removing discrimination against citizens of Eastern European countries in terms of differences in declarations, the composition and taste of products.
˝At a time when we are negotiating with the US on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), with the aim of opening new markets, the EU market is not sufficiently harmonized, as is confirmed by research that has proven that lower quality products end up on the shelves of shopping centres of new EU member states such as Croatia. I believe that we must first harmonize the European internal market in order to then be able to do a good job with the US on TTIP,˝ MEP Šuica stressed in a letter to the Commission.
She specifically pointed out products covered by the study, such as Tic tac dragees, Pringles Original chips, M & M's chocolate candy, Jacobs 3in1 coffee, Snickers chocolate sticks, Skittles fruits candy, Raffaella, Fisherman's friend candy, Orbit Spearmint chewing gum, Taft dwt maxx hair gel, Pez compressed candy, Nivea body milk, Neutrogena body lotion, Garnier Fructis shampoo, Head & Shoulders shampoo, Nutella, Gillette shave gel, Domestos disinfectant, and Lenor spring fabric softener that are of lower quality on Eastern markets, to which Croatia belongs.
MEP Šuica warned former Commissioner for Consumer Protection Neven Mimica that there are products on the market with the same declarations but with various attributes, who pointed out that national authorities are in charge of monitoring and protecting the consumer of possible irregularities in the market of individual EU Member States. He added that the European Commission would strive to further improve and coordinate the efficiency of national authorities, but the situation in the Republic of Croatia has not changed to this day.
